Drumhillery News Sheet - Feb 2002

Saying of the month
I found a little remedy
To ease the life we live
And make each day a happier one:
It is the word "forgive." —Anon.

Dear Members

Dear Members

"A earthly story with a heavenly meaning" is how a parable has been defined.

In our Bible Studies recently we have been considering some of the parables, they have been the basis of our family services and a number of sermons. I wonder how many of the forty that are recorded in the New Testament can you name?

The earthly stories are about all kinds of people; builders, farmers, bankers, managers, lawyers, widows, tax collectors, landlords tenants, etc. They tell of all sorts of events; sowing seed, tending sheep, getting married, going on a journey, searching for something, asking for bread, going to a party, etc.

The same stories speak to us about how valuable we are to God, about how slow we can be to come to Him, about how precious it is to know Christ, about the necessity to love and forgive others, the importance of prayer and of having hearts that are soft towards God.

Some are stories with a number of characters, some are remarkably concise like the first one recorded in Matthew 5:14-15. Here Jesus said :-

"You are the light of the world.

A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

While the picture is simple the practice is somewhat more difficult. While Jesus The light of the world, his followers who have the light of life within them are called to declare it to all around. To be like a city on a hill, or a light on a lamp stand. Our motives, our attitudes, our words and our actions all should stand out and shine brightly.

As Paul puts it in Philippians 2:14-15

"Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world"

Or as Jesus simply states in following the parable itself (v16).

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Each day we need to make it our prayer that by God's power and with his help that we may not only be his people, but cause people to praise and glorify God.
