The Past From around 1745 people in the area wanted to establish a congregation. A request was sent to the Church of Scotland asking for a minister to be sent to Drumhillery. This was signed by {Samuel Wilson and John Wilson (Cavangarvan), William Reilly (Tivnacrea), George Mitchell alias Bann Drumhillery, John Maxwell and John Keenan (Tullyglushkain), Robert Sweeney and Robert Jameson (Derrynoose), John Smith (Dromond)} On 3rd July, 1748 Rev Dr. Thomas Clarke was sent from by the associate Synod in Scotland and preached his first sermon at John Smith's of Dromond, a second sermon at one old rath at John Maxwell's at Tullyglushkaine and for a third time on a rock near where the present meeting house stands. He did not settle in the area and accepted a call to minister in Ballybay. To be continued .... |
